'The State’s largest team of cancer specialists, with over 60 world-class cancer physicians and 110 research scientists recruited from such esteemed institutions as the University of Texas – M.D. Anderson, Mayo Clinic, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute, Stanford University, Harvard University, and Johns Hopkins University. We’re one of the nation’s 60 premier National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Centers and we have been named one of “America’s Best Cancer Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report.
The only problem is that we’ve completely outgrown our existing facilities! Today, the UNM Cancer Center provides cancer diagnosis and treatment to over 40% of the adults and virtually all of the children diagnosed with cancer each year in our State. While 52% of these patients come from Bernalillo County, 48% travel to Albuquerque from every county in New Mexico and from many other States to receive world-class cancer treatment. While we are building a statewide cancer network, with collaborative programs in Las Cruces (The UNM Cancer Center – Southern New Mexico), Santa Fe, and Farmington, we are still providing care to over 6,500 patients in over 80,000 annual clinic visits at our central hub at UNM. That’s more than three times the number of visits our facility was designed to accommodate! On a busy day, we treat as many as 375 patients in a space that was built to handle no more than 150. The result: patients often have long waits for their scheduled appointments and some have to sit in the hallways because there aren’t enough seats in our waiting areas'
