We’re one of the nation’s 60 premier National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Centers and we have been named one of “America’s Best Cancer Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report.
The only problem is that we’ve completely outgrown our existing facilities! Today, the UNM Cancer Center provides cancer diagnosis and treatment to over 40% of the adults and virtually all of the children diagnosed with cancer each year in our State. While 52% of these patients come from Bernalillo County, 48% travel to Albuquerque from every county in New Mexico and from many other States to receive world-class cancer treatment. While we are building a statewide cancer network, with collaborative programs in Las Cruces (The UNM Cancer Center – Southern New Mexico), Santa Fe, and Farmington, we are still providing care to over 6,500 patients in over 80,000 annual clinic visits at our central hub at UNM. That’s more than three times the number of visits our facility was designed to accommodate! On a busy day, we treat as many as 375 patients in a space that was built to handle no more than 150. The result: patients often have long waits for their scheduled appointments and some have to sit in the hallways because there aren’t enough seats in our waiting areas'

Helping to Enhance Research in OncologySM

NMCCA's HERO Program provides access to the latest information on cancer research for the public and for medical professionals. Through our HERO Education Outreach Program, we bring nationally-known speakers to Albuquerque and provide local experts to inform people about the latest developments in cancer research and treatment. Our community newsletter concentrates on one cancer disease site per issue in addition to providing information about NMCCA s recent efforts.
NMCCA is a network of the healthcare institutions and approximately 93 cancer treatment physicians in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Las Cruces, New Mexico and is in the process of expanding throughout the state. Many Alliance physicians treat patients from throughout the state of New Mexico.
Our Goals
1. Make it easier for cancer patients to participate in a clinical trial

A local clinical trial allows patients to remain in their home and community as much as possible while receiving care from a physician they know. Additionally, their family, friends and loved ones are nearby. Having a support group nearby during treatment greatly benefits patients.
2. Increase the quality of cancer care in New Mexico
Clinical research studies (also known as clinical trials) are medical research studies involving people. Cancer clinical research studies test experimental drugs, new combinations of treatments, new approaches to surgery or radiation, or other previously untried methods for treating cancer. A clinical trial has the potential to increase the quality of care patients receive in the long term because it makes medical research more accurate and in the short term because the patient's treatment is followed closely by the cancer research staff.
3. Ensure access for all New Mexicans to the best cancer therapies offered through clinical research studies.

* There are many reasons, economic and emotional, that patients do not participate in clinical research studies. One possibility is that some patients may not be aware of the level of care, including clinical trials, available in New Mexico. These patients may believe they must look for treatment at cancer centers elsewhere in the US and may decide not to participate in a cancer clinical trial because traveling outside the state for treatment is too costly.
* Having clinical research studies available locally can reassure a patient that they can manage the costs and their support system will remain nearby during their treatment.
Our Strategies
1. Provide the structure needed to make participating in a clinical research study easier for New Mexico cancer patients.
NMCCA will work with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and private organizations to bring clinical trials to the state. NCI-sponsored studies, in particular, usually provide physicians with greater access to new, experimental anti-cancer agents. Through NMCCA, community specialists can receive access to these agents, enroll patients in clinical studies and treat them according to research protocols in their own New Mexico-based practices.

It is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the Western world. Colorectal cancer causes 655,000 deaths worldwide per year.[1] Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from adenomatous polyps in the colon. These mushroom-like growths are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy. Therapy is usually through surgery, which in many cases is followed by chemotherapy.
Colon cancer often causes no symptoms until it has reached a relatively advanced stage. Thus, many organizations recommend periodic screening for the disease with fecal occult blood testing and colonoscopy. When symptoms do occur, they depend on the site of the lesion. Generally speaking, the nearer the lesion is to the anus, the more bowel symptoms there will be, such as: * Change in bowel habits o change in frequency (constipation and/or diarrhea), o change in the quality of stools o change in consistency of stools * Bloody stools or rectal bleeding * Stools with mucus * Tarry stools (melena) (more likely related to upper gastrointestinal eg stomach or duodenal disease) * Feeling of incomplete defecation (tenesmus) (usually associated with rectal cancer) * Reduction in diameter of feces * Bowel obstruction (rare)

SUF CANCER HOSPITAL PROJECT - DETAILS AND SERVICES - OPENING DATES AND INFORMATION
The Shands at UF Cancer Hospital is a $388 million investment to bring state-of-the-art cancer treatments to North Central Florida. The 500,000-square-foot facility will house 192 private inpatient beds for a variety of patients, including those receiving diagnostic and therapeutic oncology services. It also will include a Critical Care Center for emergency- and trauma-related services. Shands is pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the cancer hospital project. LEED is the U.S. Green Building Council's rating system that has become the national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings.

SEATTLE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL - TUMOR PAINTING AND CANCER TREATMENT - DETAILS
Traditionally surgeons operating on patients with brain tumors were put in the difficult position of having to remove too much healthy tissue, and possibly crippling the patient, or removing too little and leaving deadly cancer cells behind. A new technique, called "tumor painting" will allow surgeons to distinguish between healthy cells and cancer cells. Leading the research into tumor painting is Dr. James M. Olson, of Seattle Children's Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
